Green Ideas

Concerned about the environment, but don't know how to help? No worries! Here are some ideas to help reduce your carbon footprint and have a better impact on the environment. After all, we only have one planet. Let's look after it.

Take the WWF carbon footprint calculator

This test calculates your carbon footprint, and even lets you know what aspects of your life make up your score. That way, you can find out what you need to change in order to have a greener lifestyle! Click here to take the test!

Buy locally sourced, cruelty-free meat

Meat and other produce that isn't locally sourced has to be transported much further, adding CO2 to the atmosphere, especially when you order from overseas. Ordering local produce is much better for the planet. When buying meat and other animal products, look for a cruelty-free source. Not only does it provide more nutrition, taste better, and is better for you, but you can rest easy knowing that the animals are treated with the kindness and respect they deserve.

Make your home more energy efficient

Another way to be kind to the planet is by becoming a more energy efficient household. You can do this by air sealing your attic, insulating your home, choosing high quality windows, turning lights and electronic appliances off as much as you can, replacing old, less efficient appliances, buy eco friendly light bulbs, adding solar panels, switching to an environmentally friendly energy provider, and planting trees. Not only is this better for the planet, but also helps you save money in the long term!

Reduce plastic usage

As you may know, plastics are very bad for the environment, and often end up in the ocean. Some ways to reduce your plastics are:

  • Always bringing reusable water bottles, coffee cups, wooden cutlery, metal/bamboo straws, and fabric bags out with you.

  • Instead of clingfilm, use beeswax wraps to wrap food.

  • Use fabric as present wrapping.

Good luck on your journey!

Recycling

Whenever you can, always recycle! Plastics, tins, glass, paper, compost, etc, recycle everything you can! This means that less materials will be wasted and end up in landfills and the ocean, less deforestation will take place, since the deforestation is to make way for production, less CO2 will be emitted, and products will be more sustainable. You can also buy products made from 100% recycled material, so don't pass up the chance!

Reduce food waste

About 1000 tons of food is wasted every minute. That's 6000 tons an hour, 144,000 tons a day, 1.008 million tons a week, and 1.3 billion tons a year. Instead of this, we could be saving and eating our leftovers, not buying too much, recycling and composting what we can't eat, making sure our food isn't too close to its use-by date, putting food we want to save in our freezers, etc. This year, let's all work together to try and lower that number. We've got this!
